How to Properly Discard Airship Helium Tanks (USA)
Step 1: Review Manufacturer Instructions
Check the tank’s labeling or documentation for any disposal instructions from the manufacturer.
Step 2: Verify the Tank is Empty
- Take the tank to a well-ventilated outdoor area.
- Open the valve completely to ensure all helium is released.
- Check that the pressure is at zero by pressing down on the nozzle to verify
no sound of gas is escaping when the valve is briefly opened.
Important: Helium is non-toxic but can displace oxygen—always vent outdoors.
Step 3: Mark the Tank as Empty
- Clearly label the tank with “EMPTY” and “DO NOT REFILL” using a permanent marker or sticker.
- For added clarity, you can remove or disable the valve, or drill/punch a hole in the tank (if safe and legal to do so).
If you are not trained or equipped to do this, move to step 5 and have a facility handle it.
Step 4: Contact Local Scrap Metal or Recycling Facility
- Many U.S. scrap yards and metal recyclers accept empty steel gas cylinders, but policies vary.
- Call ahead to confirm they accept steel helium tanks and ask if they require the valve removed or tank punctured.
- You can find local recyclers via:
- Earth911 Recycling Locator
- Your city or county’s waste management department
Step 5: Transport Safely
- Ensure the tank is clearly marked as empty.
- Secure the tank upright during transport to avoid rolling or shifting.
Step 6: Document the Disposal (Optional but Recommended)
- For commercial or fleet operations, log the tank’s serial number and disposal date.
- This helps with inventory control and compliance with OSHA or FAA standards if applicable.
Legal Reminders
- Do not throw the tank in household trash or dumpsters.
- Never dispose of pressurized or partially full tanks—this is a safety hazard
and may violate local or federal regulations (e.g., DOT, EPA).
